Mernda Rail Extension Program

Update about Mernda Rail Extension Program

Planned for completion in 2019, this project extends the train rail 8km from South Morang to Mernda Town Centre. There will be three news stations Mernda, Marymede (adjacent to Marymeded Catholic College) and Hawkstowe parade.

A massive initiative that will greatly benefit those who living in the surrounding area. It is estimated that 8000 people will be switching from using the roads when the stations are officially opened, plus there will be 2000 new car spaces, bike storage and additional bus facilities.

The design is inspired by homestead verandas and big farm sheds, with blue stone excavated from the site and reclaimed timber being used for landscaping and fencing. There are also vandal resistant measures in place.

To address community concerns over loss of green outlook, council required the plan to include a minimum of two trees planned for every tree removed.

Public safety measures include no level crosses (rail bridges and under passes only) and all active stations will have CCTV and PSOs will patrol the new stations each night from 6pm.
