Tips to Successfully Work from Home

Covid-19 is here, and boy is it a game changer. It’s grown into something most of us never expected to see in our lifetimes, and probably never will again. The world is basically in lock down, and all of us are in unchartered territory. For most of us, it’s time to move to work from home.

We’re in it together though, and we’ll get through it together. This is a time for that great Aussie spirit to shine through, to help us through the tough times. Remember that a smile goes a long way, so let’s do our part to create a kindness pandemic to rival this coronavirus pandemic.

If you’re not already working from home, many of you will be doing that a lot over the coming weeks and maybe even months. Remote work may sound like a dream come true, but the reality is it can be tough. You need to figure out ways to balance family life and work life with staying mentally and physically healthy. Basically, you got to stay sane and on top of it all.

Here at Ristic Real Estate we’ve identified a few pointers that’ll help us adapt to working from home. We wanted to share them with you, because they apply to all industries and job types.

Establishing Your Home Office

Office Space: If you’re lucky enough to already have a dedicated office room in your home, then that becomes sacrosanct ground when you work from home. No kids, pets, intrusions of any kind. A lot of us don’t have an office, so think about where you’re going to create a work zone that has minimal distractions. Bingeing Netflix is fun and all, but it’s going to hinder your productivity big time! Converting a guest bedroom or taking over the dining room would be our tip.

Technology and Sound: Do a quick audit of the tech you’ve got at home. It is sufficient to run a home office from? Remember you’re going to be doing videoconferences and talking on the phone a lot. A good idea would be to get a well-fitted headphone set and mic to make your calls on. Are you going to be working off a laptop? Think about getting a bigger standalone screen you can plug into your laptop. It’ll save you from squinting and the resulting headaches.

Internet: How important is wifi going to be over the next few months?? Make sure your internet bills are paid so you won’t get cut off. Also make sure your download limit and speed is sufficient for the extra work you’re going to be doing at home.

Comfort: You’re going to be spending a lot of time at your home desk, so best make sure your office chair is up to the task. Your setup at the office has been ergonomically created for long hours sitting in front of your computer. If your domestic setup isn’t, it might be time to invest in a decent office chair. Your back will thank you.

Dress for Success: Don’t slouch around in your pyjamas all day. It won’t inspire you to actually sit down and get some work done and be productive. Dress as you would for work. You’ll feel more professional, and you’ll look the part in video conferences.

Your Video Background: Set yourself up so that your webcam view is of you and a pleasant background. A nice brick wall, a painting, a window with a decent view. You don’t want the kids to be throttling each other in the background while you’re chatting to a client!

Create a Routine: This is something you have to work out with your partner and your whole family. It’s important to get a work, exercise and education routine that you all stick to. It helps you set targets, achieve goals and generally keep a grip on how your day unfolds. It gives you your space to work, and everyone their space to do what needs to be done.

These are challenging times, but they also bring opportunity. An opportunity to grow close to your family, to have those conversations you’ve been putting off for years. Maybe even to catch up with all those jobs you’ve been putting off around the house!

So let’s lockdown and work from home successfully. If you have any questions or concerns about real estate in this time, why not get in touch with us? We’d love the chance to answer your questions and have a chat!
